Chapter 17
AIFE
I had woken to a face full of hair and a pounding headache. The subtle light from somewhere behind my closed lids roused me. That and the slight suffocation from the blonde hair that seemed to have clawed down my throat.
The first thing I saw when I opened my eyes was a dusty chandelier that hung so low it almost touched the canopy of the bed. Though my vison was obscured by the hair that was probably wrapped around my lung by now.
I removed the arm from my stomach and stood, the floor an icy welcome to my aching feet. I went to the washroom and splashed my face with water before cleaning myself quickly.
My favorite part of Austiria was the whisky, and unfortunately, I tend to overindulge. The evidence of that throbbed behind my eye sockets.
Death would hurt less. At least it would have an end in sight.
Movement from the bed dragged me from the washroom and I watched as the female in my bed sat up. The blanket fell to expose her perfect breasts as she stretched. Her face pulled into the bewitching smile that caught my attention.
âGood morning,â she purred.
âSleep well?â I mused.
âYou kept me up most of the night.â
I gave her a wolfish smile. âYouâre welcome,â I replied, and she laughed in response. At some point, I ended up at a bar and drank myself into bed with her. What was her name? Laura? Heather? Janice? I was not sure; it was just a haze of alcohol and sex. Mediocre sex if I am being honest.
I had no intention of going down to the city, but after my interaction with Elle, there was a need for a reprieve. I do not know what it was about her, but something pulled me to her in a way that unnerved me. I had to find something, and someone, to keep my mind off her seemed like the best way to keep my thoughts from driving to how it would feel to have her body pressed against mine. To feel those soft lips against mine, those odd hazel eyes, and that soft hair.
Feeling her desire leak through her pores like mine did, knowing I could taint that pretty, innocent soul with my own dark one, scared me more than it should have. I grabbed a pair of black pants and matching tunic as Marieâ¦Rebecca finished lacing her dress.
While the room was nothing like mine back at Parnitus, they had been nicer to me with the furnishings than the last time I stayed here years ago. I know I could thank Zelu for that, as he had been unnaturally happy about the death of Angus. Guilt about the Allegiance Test might mingle in there as well.
After Naomi was adequately clothed in the little red dress, I distinctly remembered from the night before I walked her out.
Edith leaned in and pressed her lips lightly against mine, and simply said, âGoodbye.â
With a smile I turned, only to be greeted with those hazel eyes.
